Ashwin: curriculum
vitae
Since February 2002: freelance editor, illustrator, typesetter and proofreader. I specialise in archaeology and history, and in environmental and development studies. My activities may be summarised as follows.
Editing and typesetting academic monographs and other publications on behalf of the East Anglian Archaeology series, Heritage Marketing and Publications, Gifford, the Norfolk Archaeological Unit and others.
Since 1996, Joint Hon. Editor (with A.J. Davison) of Norfolk Archaeology, the journal produced annually since 1846 by the Norfolk and Norwich Archaeological Society. This contains a mixture of archaeological, historical and antiquarian articles and reports, many of them illustrated.
Major current projects include editing reports on excavations at St Pancras station, London, in advance of construction of the new Channel Tunnel Rail Link (Gifford Archaeology), and on the Romano-British settlement at Scole, on the Norfolk-Suffolk border (Norfolk Archaeological Unit/Suffolk County Council Archaeology Service).
I act as a referee for archaeological reports, particularly those within my own particular specialism -- British prehistory. I also undertake some teaching and consultancy.
I co-edited and fully illustrated a new edition of the Historical Atlas of Norfolk (first edition published 1993 by Norfolk Museums Service), published by Phillimore & Co. in October 2005.
Work for Curran Publishing Services, Norwich, as a copy-editor and proofreader, most notably on UNESCO's Encyclopedia of Life Support Systems. I edited 25 major articles in the three published EOLSS volumes, and nearly 50 contributions to the supporting EOLSS web site. Subject areas have included managing environmental hazards and protecting biodiversity; development education; exploring the concept of sustainable development; water management and conservation; geology and hydrology; agriculture and forestry; sustainable transportation and power generation; international disputes and conflict resolution.
Other work for UNESCO has included editing material for the International Hydrological Programme. This collaborative project contributes to the World Water Assessment Programme, within the framework of a joint UNESCO-Green Cross International project, 'From Potential Conflict to Co-operation Potential (PCCP): Water for Peace'.
Work for Norfolk Education and Action for Development, a development education centre in Norwich, has included editing and designing reports and catalogues, creating posters, leaflets and other promotional matter, and producing a series of information panels publicising NEAD's activities. I have also worked for the trade justice campaigning organisation Banana Link.
November 1989-September 2001: Norfolk Archaeological Unit. Project Manager (November 1989-July 1996); Senior Project Manager (July 1996-2001).
The NAU (now NAU Archaeology) is one of East Anglia's oldest-established archaeological contracting organisations. Until 2005 it was part of Norfolk County Council's Museums and Archaeology Service.
